Community Information:

The community of Langstaff Corners grew at the intersection of what is now Yonge Street and Highway 7, after John Langstaff took over his father-in-law's property around 1808. After the War of 1812, Langstaff operated a general store, a blacksmith shop, some woodworking shops and a post office which opened in 1870. By the mid 1800's there was a tollhouse and gate at the intersection for travellers using Yonge Street. Today, the name, Langstaff, is, perhaps, the most well-known name of any Richmond Hill community or resident, past or present.

James Langstaff, one of John's sons was one of the first doctors born and trained in Ontario. He began his Richmond Hill practice in 1849. His son, Rolph Langstaff and Rolph's wife Lillian, and their son Doctor James Rolph Langstaff also became well-known doctors in Richmond Hill,  after 1926. As this family practiced medicine in Richmond Hill for over a century it is appropriate that one wing of York Central Hospital is named the Langstaff Wing. Doctor James Langstaff became chief of staff of the hospital in 1963.
